On 20th June 2019, the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Early Warning System station in Lunana recorded a rise in water level and reported the incident to the appropriate authorities. The rise in water level was due to breach of a subsidiary lake in Thorthormi. There are no significant impacts reported. Since the initial breach of the subsidiary lake, the water has remained at normal level.

The situation is being continuously monitored by the National Centre for Hydrology & Meteorology (NCHM) at Thanza lake-site station, Wangduephodrang and Thimphu Control Centres and by the Department of Disaster Management. Authorities concerned have held coordination meetings to consider precautionary measures. A special team of experts are visiting the lake site on 22nd June 2019 to make a rapid assessment of the lakes and the surrounding areas.

Based on information received from NCHM, updates are being provided to all relevant stakeholders.

Advisory from NCHM on Cyclone FANI

During the last 24 hours the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ has intensified into Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm which is now located over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, 600 km from Puri (Odisha) and 400 km from Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). The system is moving north-northwestwards.

Impact over Bhutan As per the latest forecast, due to change in the forecast track of cyclone. Bhutan is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the southern, eastern and isolated places of central parts of the country on 4th and 5th May while the rest of the country is likely to receive moderate to heavy rain.

Joining of new Director General to Department of Disaster Management

As per the Executives Transfer of the Royal Civil Service Commission dated 15th January, 2019, Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, former Director General of the Department of Information Technology & Telecom, Ministry of Information & Communications, has formally joined as the new Director General for the Department of Disaster Management under Ministry of Home & Cultural Affairs with effect from 11th February, 2019.

Update on DMCP Training at IMS, Serbithang

The sector DMCP training scheduled for 18 th December will start from 19th December at 9:30 am at IMS, Serbithang. The DDM would like to request all the participants to exercise extreme caution while driving to the training venue owing to the ice on the road.


First Snowfall of the Year

Today (18/12/2018) has been declared as a holiday to mark the first snowfall of the year by Royal Government of Bhutan.
Therefore, the scheduled DM & CP training is postponed until further notice. The DDM would like to request the general public to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travels.


Practical Emergency Logistics Training from 10th to 13th December, 2018

The Department of Disaster Management and the World Food Program organized Practical Emergency Logistics Training from 10th to 13th December, 2018 on handling of Mobile Storage Unit (10m x 32m). Such facility will be used for setting up Humanitarian Staging Area during emergencies like major earthquakes for receiving, storage and distribution of relief materials. It could also be used as temporary shelter, emergency office, etc. The participants were from the Royal Bhutan Police, Desuung, Disaster Communication and Helpline Unit, Food Corporation of Bhutan and Fablab Bhutan.


Earthquake Simulation Exercise for Thimphu Thromde on 10th November, 2018

This is to notify the general public that Thimphu Thromde in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management and Save the Children through ECHO funding will be conducting an Earthquake Simulation Exercise for Thimphu Thromde on 10th of November between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Exercise will comprise simulation of fire outbreaks, roadblocks and collapse of buildings requiring Search and Rescue, Medical Emergency, Traffic and Fire Fighting Response Services in Norzin and Babesa Demkhongs.

The general public is requested not to panic and to cooperate with the crowd control and traffic teams. The purpose of this simulation exercise is to inform and educate the general public as well as to test preparedness levels of Thimphu Thromde and the responding agencies.

Please bear with any inconveniences caused as a result of this simulation exercise.
