Disaster Preparedness and Sensitization Training program on Dzong Fire Safety

Following the 24th June 2012 catastrophic fire Disaster of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, the Department of Disaster Management under MoHCA had an emergency meeting on 26th June 2012 and came up with the Proposal to conduct Disaster Preparedness and Sensitization Training program on Dzong Fire Safety, targeting all the Dzongs and important Lhakhangs/Goendeys in all the 20 Dzongkhags as an immediate priority. Such Training Program would enhance and strengthen disaster preparedness and response capacities at the Dzongkhag and Dratshang levels. It was also decided to come out with Dzong Disaster Contingency Plan, specific to each Dzong after thorough vulnerability assessment as the long term priority and Training to be given to the stakeholders.

The Training is a 5-Day Program including 2 Day Pre-Training Assessment. The participants are mostly Dzongkhag Officials, Lopons and Gelongs of Rabdey and representatives from other Religious Institutions under the Dzongkhag.

The Training kick started from Paro Dzongkhag (15th-17th August 2012), where 61 participants from Dzongkhag, Dratshang, representatives from Lhakhangs and Goendeys and officials from the Regional offices participated in this 3-Day Training Program.

Hon’ble Nangsi Lyonpo graced the opening ceremony at Paro on 15th August 2012. Lyonpo highlighted on the importance of Disaster Preparedness and response especially for the Dzongs and other cultural properties which are vulnerable to all kind of Hazards.

Similarly, the Department of Disaster Management, MoHCA in collaboration with relevant stakeholders conducted the Training in Bumthang, Gasa and Trongsa Dzongkhags and the same Training will be rolled out in remaining Dzongkhags.
