Department of Disaster Management Safe, Resilient and Happy Bhutan
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed on 2nd Wednesday of October every year. It is being observed to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness. The Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs with support from the UN agencies have been observing the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) every year since 2008.
The global theme for International day for disaster reduction 2013 is “Living with disability and disasters”. This theme is to focus on people with disabilities who are the most vulnerable group during disasters.
With the objective of raising awareness and educating the public, especially the school children and vulnerable communities on disaster risks in the country, the IDDR 2013 in Bhutan will be observed in Kanglung, Tashigang Dzongkhag and the following events will be carried out:
- Statement from Chief Guest (Hon´ble Minister for Home & Cultural Affairs, Lyonpo Damcho Dorji has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest for IDDRR 2013 Celebration).
- Essay Competition among Schools with special needs students in below two age categories:-
- Age group below 15 years, topic “How can we support people with disabilities during a disaster?”
- Age group 15- 25 years, topic “Responsibilities of the society towards people with disabilities during disasters”.
- Message from the Hon’ble Minister for Home & Cultural Affairs on IDDR in local news Papers to mark the day and to spread the awareness message for the IDDR.
- Cultural Show (including song on Disaster Management & Disaster Risk Reduction) by students and DM unit of Sherubtse College. Draktsho Vocational Training Institute, Rongthong, Munseling Institute, Khaling.
- Exhibition on Disaster Risk Management by Disaster Management unit of Sherubtse College.
- Poster presentation and exhibition on hydro-met services of Bhutan.
- Quiz on Disaster Management among four higher Schools under Trashigang.
- Presentation on Disaster Risk Reduction through Hydro-Met Services with focus on disabilities -Department of Hydro-met Services (DHMS).
